Eyelid surgery treats the delicate areas around the eyes, which are the first to show signs of aging or fatigue. Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) removes excess skin and muscle, as well as protruding fat, from around the upper and lower eyelids. Eyelid surgery can correct droopy upper eyelids and puffy bags below the lower eyelid.
The exact procedure depends on your needs and the condition of the eyelids. Some people need only their upper or lower lids treated. Some may need both. Eyelid surgery can be done alone or in conjunction with other procedures used to restore a fresher, more youthful appearance. Eyelid surgery is performed in the hospital or ambulatory care center. The incisions are placed within natural folds in the eyelid and usually heal exceptionally well and are not visible. The sutures are removed about 5 days after surgery. You are able to return to work in approximately one week. At the time of your first visit, a complete medical history will be taken and a thorough examination of your eyes and eyelids will be performed. On occasion, it may be necessary for you to be seen by a board certified ophthalmologist prior to eyelid surgery. Eyelid surgery can be done under general anesthesia, but commonly it is performed under local anesthesia with intravenous sedation administered by the anesthesiologist.
The operation involves removal of excess skin, muscle and fat from around the eyes, as well as tightening of the underlying structures of the eyelids. Complications following eyelid surgery are infrequent and usually minor. Nevertheless, problems such as bleeding, infection, or temporary excessive tearing can occur. Another rare problem is ectropion, which is a pulling down of the lower lids due to the scar. This usually resolves with time and with scar massage, but on rare occasions it may require further surgery to correct.
For the first two to three days after surgery, we recommend using ice cold compresses around the eyes in order to decrease the swelling. You should also avoid any strenuous exercise, and sleep with your head propped up on couple of pillows for about a week. Overall, eyelid surgery is an excellent procedure that treats and tightens the areas surrounding the eyes, thereby giving the patient a more rested and youthful appearance.
